"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses" . . . (Heb 12:1)

The early Christians of the first three and one half centuries were dreadfully persecuted and this resulted in many, many of the early followers of Christ being martyred for the faith.  The church responded by designating November 1st as All Saints Day, one which the memory of those martyrs would be remembered.  In time, the church realized that these great leaders of the faith were not only the saints that needed to be remembered.

Therefore, the custom has been developed to honor all the faithful of the church, who have died, on the first Sunday of November by sharing a moment of prayer and remembrance for them.

On Sunday, November 4th we will do this as well.  There are two opportunities for you to share the name or names of those who have been saints to you.  People who have helped you grow in your relationship with God and have nurtured you in the faith, and have now died.  There will be a moment during the Pastoral prayer at which time the congregation will be invited to share those names aloud.

There will also be a special opportunity to honor them during worship.
